Introduction
Welcome
The Personal Jukebox is a portable mp3player with an 6, 20, 30 or 40GB, 2.5 inch hard drive. The smallest of these can store about 1500 files, the equivalent of about 150 cds. The Personal Jukebox was originally designed and developed by the Compaq Computer Corporation's Corporate Research Labs, who have licensed it to HanGo.
The hardware comes with management software for Windows98 only. Management software for Windows 2000 is available by download from the official website and Mac management software should also be available. The original management software for Linux was written by Alex Moseley, this original version is available for download, as well as newer version, written as part of the pjbapplet Sourceforge project.
The application has a similar interface and functionality to the original Windows application supplied with the Personal Jukebox, but adds additional functionality, such as track downloads
The Personal Jukebox is a USB device and therefore requires USB support to be configured into your kernel, either as a module or compiled in.
Currently the application builds and runs on a RH7.1 (and RH7.3) system, with kernel 2.4.6, 2.4.13, and 2.4.18, but there is no reason why it should not function on other distributions and kernel versions that have USB support.
Current plans for the support of the PJB within Gnome have changed, and the need for a specific application is reducing, with the availablity of the pjbvfs method, and possible future integration with Rhythmbox.
